South Carolina Football: A New Recruit Joins the Team
The SEC is losing a talented quarterback to the Gamecocks. But here's where it gets interesting: DJ Hunter, a dual-threat quarterback from Buford, Georgia, has recently decommitted from the Kentucky Wildcats. This move has left many wondering what motivated his decision to switch teams.
Hunter, a native of Lexington, Kentucky, had been committed to the Wildcats since last April. However, following his decommitment, he revealed that schools like South Florida, Maryland, West Virginia, Florida State, and Duke were actively recruiting him. He also mentioned that Auburn, Kennesaw State, UAB, Vanderbilt, and Virginia Tech had visited him in January.
What makes Hunter's decision even more intriguing is his public announcement of SEC offers from the Wildcats, Gamecocks, and Ole Miss Rebels. It seems that South Carolina's offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach, Kendal Briles, saw something special in Hunter and made a strong pitch to secure his commitment.
As the starting quarterback at one of the best high school programs in the country, Hunter led his Buford Wolves to the 2025 state championship in the Peach State. His dual-threat abilities, including a 40-yard dash time in the 4.5s, make him a versatile and exciting prospect. He has the arm strength to make most throws and has experience with RPOs and the option game, which adds to his intrigue for Briles and the Gamecocks.
According to the Rivals Industry Ranking, Hunter is the country's No. 593 overall prospect and the No. 38 quarterback nationally. He is also ranked No. 69 in the talent-rich state of Georgia and is a unanimous three-star recruit.
Briles has been busy offering scholarships to multiple class of 2027 quarterbacks since his hire earlier this offseason. Former TCU commit Jerry Meyer will visit in March, adding to the excitement surrounding the team's recruitment efforts.
