Amidst the usual discussions about holiday ailments and seasonal allergies, Island Health has issued illness alerts at four of its facilities. The health authority regularly updates its outbreak list, which is posted daily.

In Greater Victoria, the Chartwell Vista Retirement Community in Esquimalt has been grappling with a norovirus outbreak since February 17, confined to the long-term care area on the second floor. Similarly, Saanich Peninsula Hospital has been affected by norovirus since February 23.

Further investigation is underway to confirm a norovirus-like illness that emerged on February 24 in the second-floor Camas Unit of The Hamlets at Duncan Residence.

Norovirus, a group of viruses causing acute gastroenteritis or stomach flu, is distinct from influenza or the flu, which is a respiratory infection caused by the influenza virus, according to Island Health. Outbreaks of norovirus occur annually and are prevalent in long-term care homes, daycare centers, schools, hospitals, and cruise ships.

The virus spreads through poor hand hygiene or when an infected individual handles food, water, or ice. It can also be found in the vomit and diarrhea of those affected. Symptoms typically appear within 24 to 48 hours after exposure, and most individuals recover within two to three days.

Nanaimo Regional General Hospital has been listed for influenza H1N1 since February 24.

The active outbreak list is updated daily, with facilities being removed when an outbreak is declared over. For the latest news delivered directly to your inbox, visit the provided link.
