The sentiments of game developers are shifting dramatically, with many expressing disdain for artificial intelligence, a desire for unionization, and a noticeable decline in interest towards developing games for Xbox. This trend comes to light with the impending 2026 Game Developers Conference (GDC), now branded as the GDC Festival of Gaming, set to unfold in early March in San Francisco. Ahead of this key industry gathering, GDC has shared insights from its annual survey, revealing perspectives from over 2,300 professionals within the gaming sector on various pressing issues, ranging from generative AI to widespread layoffs. The findings paint a rather bleak picture of the current state of affairs in the gaming world.
A striking majority of developers now believe that generative AI poses a threat to the gaming industry. Back in 2024, opinions were more divided, but the sentiment has taken a sharp downturn. Only 7% of survey respondents now hold the belief that generative AI will benefit the industry, a significant decrease from 13% last year. In contrast, a whopping 52% feel that this technology will result in negative consequences, marking an alarming increase from just 12 months prior. This shift in perspective is echoed among artists, storytellers, and programmers alike, all of whom are expressing their disapproval. Ironically, while apprehension about generative AI grows, its use in mundane tasks such as composing emails continues to rise.
Moreover, developers are increasingly turning away from creating titles for Xbox. The survey indicates that only about 20% of participants plan to develop their next game for the Xbox Series X/S, a steep decline from last year's figure of 34%. In contrast, interest in developing for PlayStation 5 or the upcoming Switch 2 stands at roughly 40%. Although PC remains the favored platform for developers, these statistics reveal a concerning trend for Microsoft's gaming console, suggesting a possible shift in focus from the company towards other platforms.
On a more positive note, support for unionization among game developers is on the rise. An impressive 80% of U.S.-based respondents indicated their support for forming unions, with 62% expressing interest in becoming part of one. These figures suggest a growing momentum for organizing within the industry, especially considering that only 13% of those surveyed are currently unionized. Union movements have been gaining traction within Microsoft’s subsidiaries, largely due to a previously established neutrality agreement, yet major companies such as Electronic Arts and 2K Games have seen resistance to union formation.
Alarmingly, one-third of U.S. developers reported being laid off within the last two years, underscoring the lingering impact of recent downsizing trends. Furthermore, 17% experienced layoffs in just the past year, indicating a consistent yearly increase. Even more troubling, nearly half of those who lost their jobs struggled to secure new positions within the gaming industry during this period.
Lastly, the repercussions of the previous administration's trade policies and immigration restrictions are evidently affecting the gaming sector. According to the survey, 31% of respondents have canceled travel plans to the U.S., while another third are reconsidering future travel arrangements. A staggering 60% of non-U.S. industry leaders reported that such policies have adversely influenced their willingness to engage in business within the country. Additionally, 38% of respondents noted that tariffs have played a role in shaping their financial decisions.
