Green Party Proposes Free Bus Passes for Young People
The Green Party is advocating for a bold initiative: free bus passes for everyone under 22 in England. This move aims to enhance accessibility to education, employment, and services, particularly in rural areas. The party believes this policy is financially viable, citing research by KPMG that suggests bus passengers contribute significantly to local businesses and the economy.
However, the government has previously rejected this idea, citing budgetary constraints. Despite this, the Green Party is determined to push for change, emphasizing the potential economic benefits of increased bus usage. They argue that every pound invested in bus services could yield an economic benefit of up to £5.
The Green Party's proposal is not without precedent. Bus travel for under-22s is already free in Scotland since 2022, and London offers free travel for children under 18 and discounted rates for some 18-25-year-olds. Some bus companies in England also provide discounted rates for young people.
Green Party leader Zack Polanski highlighted the impact of the cost-of-living crisis on young people, stating that it often disproportionately affects the youngest generation. He believes that free bus travel can help alleviate this burden and improve access to opportunities.
The party is also committed to extending benefits to the disabled community by removing time restrictions on their bus passes and ensuring continued free travel for older people with extended hours. This comprehensive approach aims to make public transportation more accessible and inclusive.
Despite the potential benefits, the number of bus journeys in England has been declining over the last decade, falling short of pre-pandemic levels. The Green Party's proposal comes at a time when the importance of public transportation, especially for young people, is being re-evaluated.
