Day 116 – Memories, not Miles (2026)

A Day of Unexpected Adventures on the Trail

Today's journey was a delightful blend of routine and surprise, as I embarked on day 116 of my backpacking adventure. As an experienced hiker, I've learned that each day brings its own unique rhythm, and this one was no exception.

Morning Rituals and Tranquil Beginnings

My day began with the familiar ritual of packing up camp, a process that, despite my efforts, always seems to take its sweet time. As I prepared my gear, I couldn't help but notice the serenity of Griffith Lake, a peaceful contrast to the buzzing mosquitoes. The morning's calmness set the tone for what I thought would be a routine hiking day.

However, one thing I've learned on the trail is to expect the unexpected. As I hiked along the bog boards, a mundane task, I was suddenly greeted by the challenge of Baker Peak. This scrambling climb, a mere couple of miles in, became my morning workout, complete with the sun's warm embrace and the day's first sweat.

River Sojourn and Trailside Camaraderie

The Big Branch River, a welcome sight after a few miles, offered a much-needed respite. I joined fellow hikers Birdy and Shooter, who had already claimed their spot for a midday break. This simple act of camaraderie, sharing a snack and a pseudo-lunch while soaking our tired legs, became a highlight of the day. It's these moments of connection that truly enrich the hiking experience.

Personally, I find that these unplanned stops are what make backpacking so special. They allow us to appreciate the beauty of nature and the company of like-minded adventurers. It's a reminder that sometimes, the best memories are made when we veer off the planned path.

Pond-Hopping and Spontaneous Decisions

As I continued my journey, I stumbled upon Little Rock Pond, a tranquil oasis that beckoned me to take another break. Joining Shooter and Birdie for a swim, I couldn't help but marvel at the rainbow trout and newts swimming alongside us. This impromptu decision to waste away a couple of hours in the cool water was a testament to the freedom and spontaneity of backpacking.

What many people don't realize is that these seemingly unproductive moments are often the most memorable. They allow us to disconnect from the pressure of reaching daily targets and simply enjoy the present. It's a delicate balance between pushing forward and embracing the unexpected gifts the trail offers.

Pushing On and Finding Comfort

Despite our initial plans to camp at Little Rock Pond, a sense of duty and the desire for a more comfortable night pushed us to hike further. We arrived at a shelter, only to find it crowded and lacking a proper water source. This led to a collective decision to venture on, a choice that brought us to Bully Brook, a hidden gem with abundant water and flat tent sites.

This day taught me that sometimes, the most satisfying moments come from adapting to circumstances. By pushing ourselves a little further, we were rewarded with a pleasant campsite and the luxury of an early dinner, a rare treat on this trip.

In my opinion, backpacking is as much about the physical journey as it is about the mental one. It's about embracing the unexpected, finding joy in the mundane, and cherishing the connections made along the way. Today was a perfect example of how a seemingly ordinary day can turn into a tapestry of unique experiences and lasting memories.
