In a surprising turn of events, Robert Playter has announced his resignation as the CEO of Boston Dynamics, a company renowned for its groundbreaking work in robotics. After joining the firm back in 1994, Playter ascended to the role of CEO in 2019, guiding Boston Dynamics through significant changes, including its acquisition by Hyundai in 2020. His final day with the company will be February 27, 2026, as he embarks on his retirement journey.
Taking over as interim CEO will be Amanda McMaster, who currently serves as the chief financial officer. She will lead the company until the board of directors identifies a permanent successor.
Playter's tenure as CEO coincided with a pivotal moment in Boston Dynamics' evolution. Historically recognized for advanced research projects such as the hydraulically-powered Atlas humanoid robot, the company shifted its focus towards commercializing its innovative technologies. Under Playter’s leadership, they successfully launched several notable products, including Spot, Stretch, and a fully electric version of Atlas.
Since the introduction of Spot in 2020, Boston Dynamics' quadruped robot has found diverse applications across various industries. For instance, in 2022, the decommissioning team at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant began utilizing Spot to assess the disaster site and strategize future actions. Additionally, Stretch, which debuted in 2022, has attracted interest from major companies like DHL Supply Chain, GAP, H&M, and Performance Team – A Maersk Company.
Recently, Boston Dynamics unveiled a commercial version of Atlas, along with an updated model showcased at CES 2026. All Atlas units slated for production in 2026 have already been assigned, with plans to ship them to RMAC and Google DeepMind, and further customers are anticipated for 2027. Hyundai aims to ramp up production to as many as 30,000 humanoid robots annually by 2028.
The Boston Dynamics team expressed heartfelt sentiments regarding Playter's departure, stating, "Robert Playter is an icon of the global robotics industry. We deeply appreciate his leadership, which has guided us from our early days of creating hopping robots to being pioneers in the humanoid sector. He transformed Boston Dynamics from a modest research lab into a leading enterprise in mobile robotics, and his absence will be profoundly felt. We wish him all the best in his retirement. In an email to the staff announcing his resignation, Playter reflected on his extensive career, stating:

For over three decades, I have devoted my life to creating the world’s most advanced robots alongside an exceptional team, and I couldn’t be prouder of what we have built together.
Today, I face the challenging decision to resign as CEO of Boston Dynamics. Amanda McMaster will take on the role of interim CEO while our Board of Directors seeks a new leader. We plan to hold a company-wide meeting later this week to honor our achievements and formalize this transition. My last day will be February 27.
When I accepted the CEO position in late 2019, Boston Dynamics was at a crossroads. We needed to evolve from an innovation-focused lab into a scalable, sustainable business, all while nurturing the incredible talent and culture that fueled our success. I’m thrilled to report that we navigated these changes effectively, culminating in a remarkable year marked by significant commercial achievements with Spot and Stretch, along with re-establishing Atlas’ dominance in a rapidly growing market and strengthening our strategic alliances with Hyundai and Google DeepMind. Our success rests on the principle that we are building for the future. The robotics sector is still in its infancy, and organizations that blend technical proficiency with commercial discipline and patient investment are best positioned for what lies ahead. Boston Dynamics embodies these qualities.

Working at Boston Dynamics has been an extraordinary experience. What we have achieved here surpasses anything I could have envisioned in our early days at the MIT Media Lab’s quirky basement. We have created something truly exceptional, proving that true greatness stems from talent, dedication, and teamwork rather than individual stardom. Many of you know I’ve often said that some of my most fulfilling moments, whether in sports or business, have come from being part of a team. Leading this outstanding group has been the highlight of my life.
