WNBA superstar A'Ja Wilson is proudly celebrating her heritage by giving back to her father's alma mater, a Historically Black College and University (HBCU). Recently, the talented player for the Las Vegas Aces made a generous donation of her Nike A'One signature sneakers to the women’s basketball program at Benedict College.

A’Ja's ties to HBCUs might not stem from her own college experience, as she did not attend one herself; however, her connection to Benedict College runs profoundly deep. Her father, Roscoe Wilson Jr., was a standout player for the Tigers during the early 1970s, earning recognition as one of the most formidable big men in both the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). He was celebrated among the nation’s top rebounders, received numerous all-conference and all-NAIA accolades, and ultimately achieved the status of Small College All-American.
Roscoe Wilson's basketball career extended far beyond his time at Benedict. He played in the legendary Rucker Park League in New York, where he shared the court with basketball icons like Julius “Dr. J” Erving and Nate “Tiny” Archibald. His journey then led him to a professional career overseas, after which he returned to the HBCU community to serve as a head coach at both Benedict and Morris College, continuing a legacy of mentorship and guidance.
Meanwhile, A’Ja Wilson has forged her own remarkable path. Following a dominant high school career at Heathwood Hall Episcopal, she made a commitment to play for coach Dawn Staley and the South Carolina Gamecocks. This decision propelled her to become one of the most decorated players in college basketball history, paving her way to superstardom in the WNBA.
